Doctor alberto palleroniI write these lines after a long conversation with Dr. Alberto Palleroni, an expert in psychology and animal neurology at Harvard University. To give you an idea. On the day of Felix Rodríguez de la Fuente’s tragic accident on his trip to Alaska, Alberto was traveling with him in another helicopter. The dog and human being have been sharing paths for a long time. These have not always been in favor of the company, but rather of the need of both. The wolf shared the carrion that the human left of the large prey and the human shared the hunt for the small pieces hunted by the wolf. Little by little our species have adapted in a surprising way. Together we chased prey for 160 kilometers to hunt them down. Biomechanically we were practically the only ones who could be prepared. We evolve with them and thanks to them. We conquered the Arctic and the Middle East thanks to your help. Even Muhammad introduced into the Qur’an a note about the importance of the Salukis, an ancestral breed of dog without which there was no way to survive on the Great Plains. Against the low image that the dog enjoyed, they realized that they had to be taken care of and respected.YA003100 The Saluki is the most evolved dog. Our survival depended on its purity. They can run at 80 kilometers per hour for about 16 kilometers which no dam was able to withstand no matter how fast it was. Over the past 200 years, our endeavor to create artificial breeds tailored solely to our contemporary needs has not been a fair deal for such an old friend. Most of the pathologies in the hip of current dog breeds is due to artificial variation of the knee angle. What is known by a companion of Alberto Palleroni, Dr. Donald B. Slocum, world-renowned leader in orthopedics and one of the fathers of sports medicine as a subspecialty of Orthopedics. One of its legacies are the well-known Slocum plates used in veterinary orthopedic surgery globally. The angle of the knee has come to vary, in relation to the ancient Saluki race, up to 30 degrees. Biomechanically that variation is what is wreaking havoc on the hips of today’s races. Hopefully we will find together, a way to redirect the deep wound we have made in the DNA of our millenary companions.

Yes, there are wheelchairs for fish, although in reality they lack wheels. There are made by hand by the fish keeper and there are also more professional ones, made by veterinarians. In short, these are gadgets that allow the fish to swim in the direction of the surface.

Some fish cannot perform such an ascent because of injuries to their swim bladder.

The swim bladder is a gas-filled flotation structure located just below the spine and allows neutral buoyancy of the fish, so that it can go upwards without needing to make a muscular effort.

When there is an alteration in this organ, such as in cases of infection or obstruction, the swimming of the animal is seriously altered, causing it to remain permanently on the bottom, which causes a slow death. If this phenomenon is ever observed it is very important to treat as soon as possible.

And while the treatment has its effect, there are these tiny seats, which are basically an aid to the flotation of the animal. It seems that we have gotten competition :)!

Marta Sitjà, the caregiver of a paralyzed dog named Hope, came to us in June 2013 in search of a wheelchair. We have loved to find two years later the writing that we put below. We hope it excites you as much as we do:

Ospresentamos a Hope

Meet Hope

“I live with 2 dogs, one of them is paralyzed, I adopted her 2 years ago, she is the love of my life, there is nothing in the world so beautiful, so good, so sacrificed, so fighter, so brave, as generous and with the soul as pure as my Hoppy and this is our story:
2 years ago just around this time I had in my head to adopt another dog, I am a Canine Educator and I wanted to give home to a dog that needed it a lot, I was looking for an older one, with problems or that took a long time in a kennel. Then one day looking at Facebook a small dog appeared, with a blue wheelchair that was bigger than her. and accompanying the photo a text that said something like that if most dogs are already invisible to people because this type of animals, with problems or diseases, were even more invisible …

I started crying, and I thought it wasn’t true, that it couldn’t be true, I did care…
The next day I couldn’t get it out of my head, I thought about what his life would be like, I thought if he could adapt to mine, if I would be able to offer him a good life, I started crying…
The next day I was tired of crying, I opened the Facebook and wrote a message to the contact person, I told him who I was and what my life was like… could that animal be happy with me??
They told me that on Sunday there was a fair in Calella and to go see it, without obligation, so I went to Calella, we looked at each other, I took it in my arms and I did not let go again.
They put hope on her, because if there is a being in the world with hope and desire to live, it is her.
Hope2

Hope enjoying nature

They found her run over in the middle of the road, with her column broken; a damn hunter who as a child mutilated her by cutting her tail (and to know what other tortures she would do)She left when she was not even 1 year old, she crossed the road and a car took her ahead. It went to argentona’s kennel (curiously where I would do my internship as a Canine Educator some time later), but they could not take care of it and the association The Kat Club took over; I am clear that if it were not for those wonderful people my dog would be dead.
From there rolling around foster homes, you know, they have many dogs, they need a lot of care, those people are angels with huge hearts but they can’t do miracles, they do what they can…
Until the day I saw it on Facebook, I went to Calella and brought it home.
We adapt perfectly to each other, from the first day she has gone without a leash on the street, she does not separate from me and has learned in record time all the orders (come, stop, quiet, run …) and also all the tricks of the other dog, they are like 2 naughty offspring having fun around the city.300x250
Her life is worth millions, as far as I know (because I have been told so) there are already 2 dogs that were going to sacrifice and thanks to the example of Hope they are now going with their Wheelchair, and not only that, she brightens the day of everyone we come across, I see it in people’s faces, you know? they go with that rictus of bitterness and when they see Hoppy (that’s what I call her) a smile is drawn on her face. She is an activist, with her story we are making people aware of abuse and abandonment, we go to all the manis that are in Barcelona and everyone knows her.
He lives a normal life, only on the street he carries his child seat, but he runs, plays, eats, enjoys and entangles like any dog.
I have a respect for her out of series, she usually hurts her back legs because she carries them dead and she is hitting her with the stones and so on…. She NEVER complains, you never see her musty, she never stops wanting to go out, she has never had a bad gesture with anyone, no matter how much she suffers or hurts, never the slightest hint of aggressiveness; his resistance to pain is Guinness, his capacity to love infinite and his generosity to the unfortunate human being who has cut short his life is immense.

It is the best gift that life has given me (along with my other dog), people when they see us on the street usually say that Hope has been very lucky to find me, but who has been lucky is me, I feel privileged because the noblest look I know looks at me, and the most unconditional love is for me…
I am the lucky one and I do not stop thanking because she has changed my life, I no longer complain about nonsense, I see life d
In another way, there is more love in me. How to thank so many gifts??? I can only take care of her and love her and make her life wonderful, that’s what I do and that’s what she does with me.”

Policía holandesa especializada para actuar ante casos de maltrato animal.

Dutch police specialized to act in cases of animal abuse.

The Netherlands is a country very aware of animal abuse. They have specialized police to prevent mistreatment and neglect against them. In addition, they have recently opened a dedicated hotline.

This special police group specifically fights against the following crimes:

  • Animal cruelty
  • Negligence
  • Animal pornography
  • Poaching
  • Incitement to animal aggression towards other animals or people.

Dial 144

All types of animal cruelty can be reported by calling 144. It is also available for cases where an animal is in an emergency situation. Depending on the nature of the call, the services of animal police, animal protection officers or food safety authorities may be required.

Judges may impose fines or jail sentences on those who commit cruelty or neglect against animals.

These specialized police officers receive the same basic training as the common Dutch police officers. From there they receive specific training, which covers:

  • Legislation on animal cruelty
  • Recognition of suffering in animals
  • Procedures in confiscation of animals
  • Procedures for reporting a case of animal cruelty.

In all cases, these police officers are selected internally from among the entire police force.

In our country we have the SEPRONA (Nature Protection Service), a group of the Civil Guard specialized in safeguarding our natural environment and, although they often do wonderful tasks in animal welfare issues, there is no police as well planned and specialized as in Holland, for now.

Señor Fu con su perro

Mr. Fu with his dog

This story focuses on China. Mr. Fu, a humble 68-year-old shoemaker, contracted polio as a child. This causes him to suffer from paralysis from the waist down, which forces him to move everywhere in a makeshift wheelchair, made of part of a cart. With her he goes to work every day. Your commute to work takes an hour, but you don’t do it alone – your dog is there every day to help you.

Perro empuja a su dueño en silla de ruedas.

Dog helps his owner with a wheelchair

Due to his illness, his arms also get tired of pushing the wheels, but his faithful dog never seems to get tired, either with his head or with his front legs he pushes and guides the chair. Here you can see how the faithful puppy manages.

The surprising thing is that Mr. Fu surely did not teach this to the dog, which he does on his own initiative. In addition to helping his mobility and accompanying him throughout the day, the animal also helps him to give warmth on his feet on winter nights.

It is ironic that this case has occurred in China, knowing recently took place in the town of Yulin, in the south of the country, a festival in which about 10,000 dogs will be consumed.

From Ortocanis we join the worldwide complaint and indignation about such an event: #stopyulin2015

Did you know that music is a great ally when you need to relax a dog? It may sound strange but judging by the thousands of searches and millions, if yes, millions of views that have the videos below that we have selected for you, it will be that some truth has.

Musica relajante para perros

What’s more, dogs respond differently depending on the type of music they hear. As in humans, heavy music increases nervousness and classical music reassures and makes even dogs sleep 6% more according to the study conducted by psychologist and canine behavior specialist Lori R. Kogan, from the University of Colorado (USA). The effect of different musical styles such as classical, heavy-metal and others was studied on a total of 117 dogs, who were waiting for an adoption in an animal shelter.
Here we leave you a selection that we have made so that you can relax your dogs for hours;

1 hour of relaxing music for dogs:

2 more hours of relaxing music for animals:

One more hour of relaxing dog songs:

Perro con veterinarioArtritis-y-sintomasLuckily or unfortunately dogs don’t talk, so sometimes it can be hard to tell if they’re in pain. Fortunately, the dog’s response to pain is very similar to what we give. Depending on its level of tolerance to it, its intensity and its origin, we will observe changes in behavior that seek to avoid it. These avoidant behaviors will be more or less marked, so it is important to know well what the normal behavior of the dog in question is to realize the changes.

These changes can manifest themselves in the form of general behavioral alterations ranging from depression/apathy of the animal, through loss of appetite and abnormal panting, to situations of social avoidance or even aggressiveness, especially when the pain becomes more intense when touching the area causing said pain.

chat whatsapp perroIn more concrete terms, postural or movement alterations can be observed: the dog avoids performing those movements and postures that intensify the pain. A simple example is not to support that leg that is injured. There can also be an excessive grooming behavior of the painful area, which can bring more serious situations, such as when a small lesion on the skin is complicated in licking dermatitis, although the pain is a physiological response of protection whose function is to avoid the aggravation of an injury.

Those abnormal postures that the dog adopts to avoid feeling pain or to decrease its intensity are called analgesic postures. An example of these is the slouching that can be observed in the face of abdominal pain. With this posture the animal seeks to reduce the tension exerted by the walls of the abdomen on the organs of the cavity, which is where the pain has its origin.

Sometimes realizing the problem is not so simple, because the tolerance that the specific dog has to pain varies from one animal to another. Also, as with people, pain is difficult to quantify objectively. Even the situation occurs that pain can confuse us about the origin of it, because pain is a nervous mechanism that can originate from a localized physical injury, but it can also originate in the nervous system without having an apparent injury in the painful area. An example of this situation is the pain that is observed in a pinching in the spine: the pain does not manifest itself more intensely in the place where the injury is, but refers to the areas that are innervated by the affected nerves.

soporte-de-cadera-canino_preuIt also happens that the pain feels different depending on the affected tissue. It is easy to locate the exact place of injury in the case of muscle or skeletal pain, but not when the problem is of an internal organ: a thorn stuck in a finger is easy to find, but to know the cause of abdominal pain, the perception of which is more diffuse, it is advisable to carry out more detailed explorations, even with more informative diagnostic techniques such as an ultrasound or an X-ray.

What is really important is to realize as soon as possible the existence of pain, both to treat the problem that originates it as soon as possible and to take measures to reduce its intensity. Since pain, although a physiological response to protect the body from the complication of injuries, has been shown to delay recovery from injury. It is for this reason that treatments against pain are used even before it appears in surgical interventions. In this way it has been possible to shorten the recovery time of the dog, in addition to significantly improving its well-being.

In addition, it has been seen that if the pain is not treated it can become chronic and require lifelong medication, since the nerves are “sensitized”, even when the cause of that pain has already been resolved.

Cristobal Soto, a young Chilean designer, will make you cry with the tribute he has paid to his dog Rayita, who died in 2012 after 21 years together. It has taken a while but before I did not know much about animation and has had to learn before he can make this emotional short.

Farewell“, this is the name of this farewell short film inspired by a lifetime, the 21 years that Cristobal Soto and Rayita shared, and also in a final moment, as Soto explained to I’m Chile: “When he was going to die, I was super weak, shivering and in pain, but still at one point he licked my hand before he died, just once. I was so sorry, that after that I came up with animation.”

Belltown, a city in Seattle (USA), is watching these last weeks as a 2-year-old farmer gets on and off the bus alone and even does what she can to indicate that her stop is about to arrive.

Seattle dog's rush hour ride: on the bus, by herself, weekly

His stop is that of a dog park where he likes to play and spend time and there he travels without anyone else. The initial surprise of the neighbors, to see a dog traveling alone by bus, became a concern later, thinking that the animal had no owner. However, this dog whose name is Eclipse, has an owner named Jeff Young.

Eclipse and his owner live very close to a bus stop that they often take to go to the park. Jeff tells Komo News, Eclipse’s solo getaways began by chance. Every day while they were both waiting for the bus to arrive, Jeff lit a cigar and gave him time to smoke it before the bus that took them to the park arrived. But, one fine day the bus arrived before Jeff finished it and Eclipse’s impatience made her climb alone without waiting for anyone. The surprise was when he found that he had gotten off at the stop he was playing and arrived at the park without problems. “We separated, she took the bus without me, but I caught up with her at the pipican,” Jeff said. “It is not very difficult to get there, you go up right in front of the house and get off in the park which is only four stops away.”

Seattle dog's rush hour ride: on the bus, by herself, weekly

Now everyone who usually takes this bus knows her but at first, she kept receiving calls from friends telling her that they had found her and that they were taking care of her. He had to explain to them that he had a self-sufficient dog and that he already knew what he was doing, that they didn’t worry… who would return alone by bus.

derby-protesis-mainThe development of 3D printers is allowing very important advances in the field of medicine. Initially, this technology was used to create parts perfectly adapted to the body of each individual, using plastic materials. Medicine is already going further and organs are beginning to be created with biological materials in order to temporarily or permanently replace parts of the body.

Custom prostheses created with 3D printers have been used in humans, but this time the beneficiary has been Derby, a dog. It is an adopted dog, with a birth deformity on its front legs.

The adaptation of the prostheses are perfect, since the “mold” is obtained from Computerized Tomography of the dog’s limbs. The first prostheses used have been of low height so that it can be adapted to them to, in the future, make the definitive ones.
