derby-protesis-mainThe development of 3D printers is allowing very important advances in the field of medicine. Initially, this technology was used to create parts perfectly adapted to the body of each individual, using plastic materials. Medicine is already going further and organs are beginning to be created with biological materials in order to temporarily or permanently replace parts of the body.

Custom prostheses created with 3D printers have been used in humans, but this time the beneficiary has been Derby, a dog. It is an adopted dog, with a birth deformity on its front legs.

The adaptation of the prostheses are perfect, since the “mold” is obtained from Computerized Tomography of the dog’s limbs. The first prostheses used have been of low height so that it can be adapted to them to, in the future, make the definitive ones.

Do you remember Glory, a dog with only one leg? We already published a post about Glory the dog with just one paw in case you want to know the beginning of the story.

Glory got her three prostheses thanks to anonymous donations. But its use always requires a period of adaptation and for Glory it was the first contact with an orthopedic device, imagine wearing no less than three of them … Here is the video of his first steps with prostheses:

As you can see, at first it looks weird and it is difficult to control the steps. But with a good motivation like food he manages to forget those sensations and starts walking

Glory has been impressing owners and veterinarians with her ability to adapt to something so difficult. The rear prosthesis resisted a little more, but nothing is insurmountable. This is Glory 16 days after his first contact with the prostheses:

Adapting dogs to prostheses is not done overnight, but Glory has shown that dogs are capable of this and much more. She has been the first to demonstrate it and has opened the door to this type of procedure, which allows to give a more than dignified life to dogs that until now were destined for immobility or euthanasia.

Bravo for Glory and her caregivers!

Thank you to everyone who made it possible.

The animal had lost a leg in an accident before being found by a retiree willing to help him. Not finding the right prosthesis, veterinarians resorted to a particular solution.

Tortuga con prótesis en la pata

The animal was seriously injured in Neuried, southern Germany, thanks to an ingenious solution with Lego pieces it was able to recover its ability to walk.

“Schildi”, as the turtle was named by those who received it after its accident, had lost one of its legs and with that its mobility and autonomy, this fact could have led to its death in a short time, but its fate changed radically with an original low cost prosthesis.

A retiree from the city of Sttutgart found “Schildi” and transferred her to the Animal Shelter of Neuried, where they were able to cure what was left of the front leg, strongly affected by an infection.

The veterinarian Marcelo Bürkle did not rest in his efforts to find a solution to the lack of a prosthesis on the market for the lost leg, until he saw in his clinic the daughter of one of his employees with Lego construction toys.

The doctor used his creativity and stuck a lego wheel in the place of the turtle’s paw, which allowed him to regain mobility and thus save his life.
