FAQ

My vet didn’t know about these solutions. Why?

Ortocanis is the first store in Spain and most of Europe specializing in technical aids for dogs with mobility problems. The aids offered are often novelty items and it’s possible that your vet may not know about them yet, since although they are widely used in the USA and in the United Kingdom, they are just starting to become known here.

At Ortocanis we are backed by the support of professionals and various veterinary clinics in Spain and South America that buy our products for their practices. The best would be for you to suggest that your vet take a look at our aids and together you can evaluate whether or not they are appropriate for you.

Will a dog end up losing mobility of their hind legs earlier if they use a wheelchair?

No! Just the opposite, using a wheelchair for dogs from Ortocanis will enable the animal to be active for a longer period time and at a higher intensity, both for the front legs as well as the back. If your dog has a degenerative illness, it’s best to start using a wheelchair before they lose the ability to walk on their own. This will keep them in better physical condition and it will strengthen the musculature of the limbs and hip thus reducing the burden on the ligaments and joints.

Wheelchairs are a great tool for rehabilitation, if your pet is recovering from surgery and you foresee using one for a short amount of time you can choose to rent a wheelchair.

Do you ship to South America?

Our offices are located in Barcelona (Spain) but we ship to all countries worldwide. We make daily shipments to countries such as Mexico, USA, Colombia, Peru, … and also to Australia, Japan, Russia...

What happens if my dog also has weak front limbs?

If your pet’s front limbs are weak and they need your help to climb stairs, consider an assisted support harness or a front support harness if only the front legs are weak. If the intention is to help them using a wheelchair, we also have an accessory for front legs.

Can a handicapped dog do its business in a wheelchair?

Yes, if the support system is designed to enable your pet to urinate and defecate while in the wheelchair. Our products are intended to allow for complete comfort regarding your animal’s needs.

Handicapped dogs are usually glad not to step in their own excrements. Some very demanding dogs may initially resist using the wheelchair to “go potty” but with a little encouragement they usually come around. Some even go pee while walking.

Is it possible to use the wheelchair for other animals?

Yes. We have used wheelchairs for cats, wild pigs, sheep, goats and deer.

Why do you need measurements?

We use the measurements to build a wheelchair that provides a tailored fit to each disabled dog. The measurements aren’t always exact, that’s why we take into account that the adjustments can be made easily. It’s also recommended that you indicate weight, gender and breed.

Can my pet play in the sand or at the beach with the wheelchair?

Yes, of course! Our clients send us countless videos of their wheelchairs at the beach, at lakes… even in the water! Tell us in your order what type of ground your chair will be used on in order to determine which wheels for the chair are most appropriate.

Does my dog need a harness or a wheelchair?

The harness is a good option while waiting for the animal to recover, while a buying a wheelchair is the best option in order for the dog to be able to recover its independence, physical condition and mood.

Ortocanis wheelchairs enable the mobility of the dog’s hindlimbs, which then prevents muscle atrophy. They are indicated for severe mobility problems and those in which the owner can’t constantly support the weight with a harness.

The harness can be a more inexpensive option given that the animal can move. It’s also ideal to help them climb stairs or get in and out of the car.

When does my dog need a support harness?

The harness is indicated for any animal with mobility problems that needs a little bit of extra help to move around. It’s recommended for pets with hip dysplasia, hip osteoarthritis, instability, lack of coordination, herniated discs, ataxia, muscular or joint weakness.

When starting to use it, a good practice is having the dog associate it with their preferred things (walks, pets, quiet moments…) since initially they may be reluctant or confused by the new object.

Which is the best harness for my dog?

The support harness for dogs is the ideal aid for dogs with mobility problems. It can be easily attached to the dog’s body thanks to its simple design (adaptable to the rear or front limbs), the material can be washed and it has a lower cost. It’s the best selling support harness.
